Prior to joining the U.S. CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) and serving this 2-yr residency in New Orleans, LA, Dr. McNabb worked at the Oklahoma State Health Department. Most of his efforts focus to serve those in underdeveloped, underserved global settings. Promoted to Distinguished Consultant in 2005 and nominated for the 2005 CDC Charles C. Shepard Award, he completed the 2004 Senior Executive Services (SES) candidate development program and is certified by the Office of Personnel Management. From 2006 – 2008, he directed the Division of Integrated Surveillance Systems and Services, National Center for Public Health Informatics, CDC. Before retirement from CDC in 2010, he was Associate Director for Science; Public Health Informatics and Technology Program Office for Surveillance, Epidemiology, and Laboratory Services.
Appointed to the Hubert Department of Global Health and the Department of Epidemiology at Emory with extensive project management experience – including developing project plans, managing resources, and monitoring progress – after 14 years as Research Professor, he now serves as Adjunct Professor. He directed the King Abdullah Fellowship Program (http://kingabdullahfellowship.com/) and was Principle Investigator of the Africa CDC Institute for Workforce Development (https://africacdc.org/institutes/africa-cdc-institute-for-workforce-development) demonstrating leadership and team management by motivating, inspiring, and guiding team members to their best performance.
As a service-connected, disabled U.S. veteran, Dr. McNabb manages Public Health Practice, LLC https://publichealthpractice.com/ and serves as Adjunct Professor, Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, College of Public Health and Health Informatics, King Saud Bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences, Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and teaches at the University of Georgia, School of Public Health.
Developing the best practices for multi-communication, online e-Learning, he teaches Research Skills Development (www.researchskillsdevelopment.com) and Case Study Design and Development (https://casestudydevelopment.com). He also teaches Public Health Surveillance at the University of Georgia, School of Public Health (https://publichealth.uga.edu/) and Scientific Communication for Leaders, Successful Scientific Writing, and Public Health Surveillance (Intelligence) at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health EpiSummer@Columbia.
Having mentored >100 students through their MPH or PhD, plus 14 fellows through the CDC Public Health :Prevention Specialists program, he works on many global projects and has published two Elsevier books: Transforming Public Health Surveillance and Modernizing Global Health Security to Prevent, Detect, and Respond. These show adaption to change in project scope, schedule, budget and flexibility in approach to problem-solving and decision making. He serves on the Editorial Board, Epidemiology and Global Health.
